Digital Image Processing of Remote-Sensed Data
Digital Image Processing Software Programs
Image processing software analyses digital images obtained from satellites or airborne sensors. When talking about digital image software for digital image processing, the most prominent options include ENVI, ArcGIS, PCI Geomatica, ERDAS Imagine, and SNAP (Sentinel Application Platform), all offering advanced tools for processing and analyzing airborne imagery, including image classification, feature extraction, and data fusion capabilities; with open-source alternatives like Orfeo Toolbox (OTB) and GRASS GIS also available depending on your needs (Table 15.5). When choosing between a web platform and software, the user needs to consider a few issues. The main advantage of processing images by software may be that the user has more control over the parameters used, such as manual settings in parameters like brightness and contrast correction, quality in filtering what soil and plant are, and adjusting geographical location positioning. However, this type of processing demands considerable computing resources (hardware), which can be solved by using cloud processing. In contrast to traditional computing, cloud processing is suitable for any mobile device with an internet connection.
