Chapter 11

Yield Monitoring and Mapping in Precision Agriculture

(book excerpts)

Yield monitoring is used in precision agriculture because it helps to identify, measure, and describe the intra-field variability within a cropping system, which is exactly what forms the basis of the concept of precision agriculture. It provides variable data within a single field. This data is generated as a result of a complex interaction between several factors occurring within a farm, like farm management methods, environmental factors, and climatic factors. As a result, this data becomes a crucial asset when attempting to understand the farm so that other precision agricultural tools can be applied. During harvesting, a yield monitor is most useful when used together with a combine equipped with a differentially corrected global positioning system (DGPS) receiver. This information is used to generate a yield map, which makes it easier for farmers to visualize. Yield maps provide feedback for determining the effects of managed inputs such as fertilizer and lime, seed, and pesticides, as well as cultural practices such as tillage, irrigation, and drainage.
